Afro-Cuban All Stars - Distinto

'Distinto' from the 1999 album 'Distinto, Differente' makes me want to hop on a plane to Cuba and salsa down the aisles the whole way. The Afro-Cuban All  Stars mix pretty much all forms and styles of Cuban music including bolero, chachachá, salsa, son montuno, timba, guajira, danzón, rumba and abakua. Their music is sure to get anyone and everyone up on their feet and shaking their hips with fat grins on their faces. Other lovely songs on this album are ‘Varaciones’ a slower, more classical piece and ‘Tributo al’ with more uplifting horns and some beautiful flute playing - JTFD

Peter Tosh - Maga Dog / Skanky Dog

“Sorry fi Maga dog him go turn round bite you”

Peter Tosh was one of the original Wailers made up of Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer. He left the group in 1976 to release his debut solo album “Legalize it” after which he went on to release 6 more albums. Sadly he was murdered in his home in 1987 in an attempted robbery leaving Bunny Wailer the only original band member still alive today. Mama Africa (1983), one of the most successful of his albums features this true classic Maga Dog. I've put three different versions of the song in this video and I’ve just found a sweeet Ska Version by the Wailers recorded in the 60s! Other blissful songs on  Mama Africa include ‘Glasshouse’ and ‘Stop That Train’ and another favourite Peter Tosh song is 'Brand New Second Hand' Check em out!

P.S - A Maga dog is Jamaican Patois for a skinny, poor street dog. - JFTD

Gang Starr - Above The Clouds (Ft. Inspectah Deck) + Instrumental

"Cannot afford to be confined to a cell. Brainwaves swell, turnin a desert to a well”

This was the first Gang Starr song I heard, I remember being  hooked from the start when Guru mutters ‘uh uh uh, uh uh uhhuh’. With lyrics that paint a vivid picture, a silky flow and one of the best voices in hip-hop Guru (1961-2010) will always be one of the greats. The Hip-Hop duo made up of Guru and the legendary DJ Premier created the album Moment of Truth in 1998 which this track comes off and Ownerz in 2003, another one of my favourites. Other bangers from Gang Starr include, ‘Work’, ‘Nice Girl Wrong Place’ and ‘Skills’. - JTFD

Ted Lucas - Love and Peace Raga

Ted Lucas - Love and Peace Raga. Pure bliss, pure meditation. Ted Lucas's other beauties from The OM Album (1975) will transport you right back to a time of flares and flower power. Check out 'It's so easy when you know what your doing' and 'plain and sane and simply melody'. If you produce I'd love to hear a track with samples from this so let me know if you do. Peace! JTFD
